Same Country. Same Dates. Two Completely Different Vacations.

Two couples call our office. Both want to visit Italy. Same month. Same number of days. Similar budgets.

Easy enough. We can just book them on the same trip, right?

Hang on a minute, let's dig a little deeper.

Meet Susan and David.

Susan has wanted to see Michelangelo’s David since her college art history class. Her husband, also named David, has been making jokes about this for thirty years.

They love history, architecture and the energy of a city. Give them a knowledgeable guide who can bring ancient Rome and Florence to life, and they’ll happily engage with them all day.

They want to stand inside the places they’ve read about. They enjoy a full day of discovery, followed by dinner somewhere they can watch the neighborhood come alive.

For them, a wonderful Italy itinerary might include carefully chosen museum visits, excellent local guides and hotels that make getting around convenient.

Susan comes home talking about the art.

David comes home explaining Roman engineering to people who only asked whether he enjoyed his vacation.

They are delighted.

Now meet Karen and Mike.

Karen appreciates art. She would simply prefer to appreciate it for approximately ninety minutes before someone mentions lunch.

Mike loves cooking, small towns and finding out how things are made. Tell him he can meet an olive oil producer, and suddenly he has seventeen questions about harvesting.

Their dream of Italy involves a comfortable Tuscan villa, a market visit, a cooking experience and enough time to return to the café where someone remembers their coffee order.

They would enjoy Florence for a couple of days, but then they want to settle into their villa, exploring nearby towns without relocating their suitcases every morning.

Karen comes home with a favorite village.

Mike comes home with strong opinions about olive oil and a lot of enthusiasm about buying a pasta machine.

Also delighted.

This is where customization means everything.

Both couples wanted Italy. But “Italy” was only the beginning of the conversation.

We also needed to understand what they enjoy, how they like to spend their days and what makes a vacation feel worthwhile to them.

How early do they want to start?

How much walking feels comfortable?

Does an afternoon with nothing scheduled sound heavenly—or like somebody forgot to finish the itinerary?

Would they rather spend more on a guide, a particular hotel location or an experience they’ve dreamed about for years?

Those answers help us put the pieces together.

And nobody earns extra travel points for choosing the museum over the market. You are allowed to love Renaissance art. You are equally allowed to become emotionally attached to a sandwich.

Italy can accommodate both.

That’s what I want you to understand about working with us.

You can come to The Joy of Travel with your own dates, your own interests and your own wonderfully specific idea of a good day.

You can also come to us saying, “I know I want to go somewhere, but I have no idea where to begin.”

That works, too.

We’ll talk about past trips, favorite memories, practical needs and the things you’d happily skip. Then we can recommend an approach that fits the people actually taking the vacation.

Because you’re investing money, vacation days and a considerable amount of anticipation. You deserve a trip you’re excited to wake up to each morning.

So, tell me: when you picture yourself in Italy, what are you doing?

Standing spellbound in a museum? Learning to make pasta? Wandering a village? Asking whether there’s time for another gelato?

Let’s start there.
