The Difference Between a Travel Advisor and an Influencer
Dear Friends,
There’s a word I hear often in travel these days that never quite fits me: influencer.
I understand the role influencers play in today’s world. Many create beautiful content, inspire people to explore, and share helpful ideas. But that isn’t the work I do, and honestly, most experienced travel professionals would probably cringe a little at being called one.
Why?
Because my opinions are not sponsored.
I’m not paid to praise a hotel, cruise line, destination, or tour company. I don’t owe glowing reviews in exchange for free trips, perks, hosted stays, or brand partnerships. That freedom matters to me more than polished photos or curated marketing language ever could.
When I share a travel experience, it comes from the perspective of someone whose job is to advocate for travelers—not suppliers.
That means I can tell you when something is truly exceptional.
It also means I can tell you when something misses the mark.
I believe honest insight is one of the most valuable things a travel advisor can offer. My clients trust me because they know my recommendations are based on real experience, careful listening, and years spent understanding what makes a trip meaningful for different kinds of travelers.
Not every destination is right for every person.
Not every “luxury” experience feels special.
Not every trendy place lives up to the hype.
And that’s okay.
My role is not to sell a fantasy. It’s to help people travel better, more thoughtfully, and more confidently.
I’m proud to be a travel professional. That title means something to me. It represents experience, discernment, relationships, problem-solving, and the responsibility that comes with guiding people through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
So no — I’m not an influencer.
I’m something much more useful to my clients:
An honest traveler who, after over twenty years in this industry, knows it inside and out.
And for the record, all of the above applies to my agents as well. There's not an "influencer" in the bunch.
Your Globetrotting Friend,
Joy
