Give Your Dream Trip Its Own Savings Account

We all have that trip.

The African safari. The European river cruise. The journey to Antarctica, the South Pacific or wherever your imagination wanders when you should be doing something more productive.

Then reality taps you on the shoulder and asks, “Exactly how are we paying for this?”

That is where a travel savings account comes in.

It can be as simple as opening a separate savings account and arranging an automatic transfer every payday. Even $50 or $100 at a time begins to add up—and because it is designated for travel, you are less likely to spend it on takeout, garden-center emergencies or something Facebook convinced you needed.

Why Start Early?

The earlier you book, the more choices you usually have. The best dates, cabins, rooms and experiences often fill long before departure, especially for those wonderful “trips of a lifetime.”

At The Joy of Travel, we often must confirm our personally escorted groups two years or more in advance to secure the space we need. When you reserve your place as soon as a group is announced, you aren’t only securing your spot—you are buying yourself months and months of time to save and gradually pay down the trip.

Instead of facing one intimidating expense, you can make smaller, more manageable payments. By departure, your journey may be partially—or even completely—paid for.

Turn “Someday” Into a Plan

“Someday” is a lovely word, but it is not very good at making reservations.

A travel savings account turns someday into something real. You can add a set amount from every paycheck, along with tax refunds, bonuses, birthday money or other unexpected windfalls. The amount matters less than the consistency.

And please give the account a motivating name. “Travel Savings” is perfectly sensible, but “My African Safari Fund” or “We’re Going to Italy” is much more fun.

A larger journey may require a longer runway, but that doesn’t mean it is out of reach. Starting early gives you the freedom to choose the experience you truly want without asking one month’s budget to carry the entire cost.

Open the account. Set up the automatic transfer. Add to it whenever you can.

Then, when The Joy of Travel announces the journey you have been dreaming about, you won’t have to say, “Maybe someday.”

You can smile and say, “I’ve been saving for this.”
