After 20 Years, We’re Changing the Way We Travel

Twenty years ago, people often came to a travel agent because they needed someone to make reservations.

Today, you can make a reservation from your phone while standing in line for coffee. But a reservation is not the same thing as a thoughtfully designed journey.

After more than two decades in travel, The Joy of Travel has evolved. We are no longer simply helping people decide where to go. We are designing journeys around how they want to travel, what they hope to experience and the stories they want to bring home.

Much of that evolution has come directly from you.

You Told Us You Wanted to Slow Down

We studied your survey responses, listened to your comments and paid attention to what you remembered most after returning home.

One message came through clearly: you are tired of rushing.

You don’t want to arrive at a hotel, unpack, sleep, repack and leave again the next morning. You want time to settle in, enjoy dinner, wander an interesting street and become acquainted with a place.

That is why we are moving toward itineraries with longer stays—averaging approximately 2.5 nights in each hotel whenever possible. Fewer hotel changes mean less time packing and more time experiencing.

The Famous Sights—and the Life Around Them

Of course, we want you to see the places you have dreamed about. But a meaningful journey cannot be built entirely around monuments.

We want you to meet the people, taste the food, hear the stories and understand something about how life is lived there. Local culture should be every bit as important as the famous sights.

That might mean visiting a family-owned farm, learning from an artisan, sharing a meal rooted in regional traditions or spending time in a smaller city most tourists hurry past. These are often the experiences that spark happiness, curiosity, understanding and discovery.

They are also the moments travelers remember most.

Excellence Has Become Our Standard

We are not trying to offer the cheapest trip. Lower prices often come from removing the experiences, locations, comfort and time that make a journey worthwhile.

We will not strip down an itinerary simply to make the price more attractive. Our focus is creating genuine value by including the details that meaningfully improve your experience.

Better Travel Should Be More Responsible

We are increasingly drawn to travel partners that support local communities, protect the places we visit and work to reduce or offset their environmental impact.

We also want to introduce you to secondary cities and lesser-known communities. This helps ease the pressure of overtourism while allowing our travelers to discover hidden gems and support local economies.

It turns out that traveling more responsibly can also make a trip far more interesting.

The Right Trip for the Right Traveler

Not every journey is right for every person—and pretending otherwise serves no one.

We are putting greater emphasis on clearly explaining the physical demands of each itinerary. How much walking is involved? Are there stairs or uneven streets? How often will hotels change? Is the pace leisurely, balanced or active?

Our goal is never to talk someone into a trip that is too demanding. It is to help every traveler choose an experience they can enjoy confidently.

We Are Travelers, Too

We do not design travel from behind a desk alone. We travel. We observe. We ask questions. We notice what works, what doesn’t and what could make an experience better.

We create journeys for travelers because we are travelers.

The Joy of Travel will continue to evolve because you continue to teach us what matters. You want more time, more depth, more cultural connection and more moments of genuine wonder. You want journeys that feel personal—not mass-produced.

We heard you.

And this new chapter of The Joy of Travel is being designed around you.
